Course Information
Description An analysis of the economy as a whole including measurement and determination of Aggregate Demand and Aggregate Supply, national income, inflation, and unemployment. Other topics include international trade, economic growth, business cycles, and fiscal policy and monetary policy.
Prerequisites TSI Complete in Reading.
Learning Outcomes 1. Explain the role of Scarcity, Specialization, Opportunity Cost, and Cost-Benefit Analysis (CBA) in economic decision making.

2. Identify the determinants of Supply and Demand; Demonstrate the impact of shifts in both Market Supply and Demand Curves on Equilibrium Price and Output.

3. Define and Measure National Income and rates of Unemployment and Inflation.

4. Identify the phases of the Business Cycle and the problems caused by cyclical fluctuations in the Market Economy.

5. Define Money and the Money Supply; Describe the process of Money Creation by the banking system and the role of the Central Bank.

6. Construct the Aggregate Demand and Aggregate Supply (AD-AS) Model of the Macro-Economy and use the AD-AS Model to illustrate macroeconomic problems and potential Monetary and Fiscal Policy solutions.

7. Explain the mechanics and institutions of international trade and their impact on the Macro-Economy.

8. Define Economic Growth and identify sources of Economic Growth.

Course Policies
Instructor Policies Announcements:

I will post announcements weekly, usually early in the week. These announcements indicate upcoming due dates and notes which will be important to your success in this course. You should carefully read these announcements every week.

Exams:

Exams will be provided within a Blackboard examination window. The exams will be timed and limited to 60 minutes. Make-up exams will not be given. Missed exams will receive a score of zero. Your exam will be graded immediately by Blackboard. Feedback on specific exam questions will be given 24 hours after the exam is due. Dates for exams are listed on the Course Calendar and on the Task List.

You must work alone while taking the exam. Cheating on exams is not acceptable and will be subject to violations of the Academic Dishonesty Policy. Academic Dishonesty will result in a zero on any assignment; a second incidence of academic dishonesty will be handled at the discretion of the Department Chair

There will be a comprehensive Final Exam. All students must take the Final Exam. Failure to take the Final Exam will result in a failure of the course.

Quizzes:

Weekly quizzes will be given covering the chapter studied respectively. Dates for quizzes are listed on the Course Calendar and on the Task List. There will be no make-ups for missed quizzes. Missed quizzes will receive a score of zero. Quizzes will be averaged for a final grade.

Discussions:

There will be seven Discussion sessions in which you must participate. You must submit a thread of your own creation in direct response to the prompt and respond to two other threads begun by different classmates to receive full credit on Discussion Boards. Your participation must be substantial and meaningful in order to receive credit. You will not receive full credit for responses such as " I agree" or "Good Post".

Each Discussion Board has a grading matrix so that you can see exactly how each one will be graded. Due dates for Discussion Boards are listed on the Course Calendar and on the Task List. There will be no make-up opportunities for missed Discussions. Missed Discussions will receive a score of zero. Discussion Board assignments will be averaged for a final grade.

Plagiarism will not be tolerated and will be subject to violations of Academic Dishonesty previously outlined.

Research Project:

You will be required to submit a formal research project. The research project is due on the date listed on the Course Calendar, the Task List, and on the "Research Project" page. Required content, proper format, adequate research, and correct citations are required. A grading matrix, outline, and guidelines are provided on the "Research Project" page. The opportunity to submit a rough draft to be graded and returned to you with suggestions is provided. The Research Project is 20 percent of your final grade and is a course requirement. Failure to submit a Research Project will result in failure of the course.

Use of Instructional Materials:

Instructional materials, such as Powerpoint Presentations, Instructional Videos, etc. are provided in Blackboard for each chapter. These will be useful in understanding and reinforcing concepts as they are presented in class.

Extra Credit:

There will be no additional opportunities for extra credit. Do not ask.

Professional Communication:

My preferred method of communication is through email.

Students must use appropriate e-mail etiquette when corresponding with their instructor. This involves writing emails in a "letter" format as opposed to "text chat" format.
Attendance Policy Poor attendance is a leading reason for employment termination in all areas of employment. Attendance is taken daily as regular participation in class is necessary for proper skill development.

Students who miss more than two classes will automatically lose ten points from their final grade (one letter drop). Subsequent letter drops will be assessed after four and six absences. Eight absences will result in automatic failure of the course.
Academic Honesty Academic honesty is expected from all students, and dishonesty in any form will not be tolerated. Please consult the LSC-PA policies (Section IX, subsection A, in the Faculty Handbook) for consequences of academic dishonesty.

  1. No food or tobacco products are allowed in the classroom.

  2. Only students enrolled in the course are allowed in the classroom, except by special instructor permission.

  3. Use of electronic devices is prohibited.

Other Miscellaneous:

Reliable Internet access is required for all online courses and many traditional courses. Computer failure and lack of internet access are not acceptable excuses for missed assignments, projects, quizzes, or exams. A lack of preparation on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part. Do not postpone completion of assignments until the last minute.

You are expected to attend class as a professional student. This means you are to demonstrate proper hygiene, dress appropriately, and conduct yourself in a professional manner. Disrespect or insubordination will not be tolerated and will result in dismissal from class.

I will not discuss your academic progress over the phone. I will not answer emails past 4:30pm (1630) each day and I will not answer emails over the weekend.

It is my policy to NOT give Incompletes as a final course grade

It is the responsibility of the student to properly withdraw from the course. The withdraw process will not be initiated by the instructor.

I reserve the right, as the instructor to change, alter, omit, or add to the tentative course outline and calendar. This course continues to be a "work in progress". Assignments, due dates, etc. can change.
